I was going to say this sounded like Challenge Missions, and then I saw the date of the OP.
I do believe "USE SEARCH NOOB" catcalls have gone too far.

Thunderhead Keep style would be better without the cats and more monsters.
Mainly what I mean by that is the shape that the area is in a big oval type.

Yup... let's see what 'challenge styles' we have:
- PvP-like: Zaishen Challenges.
- Defend the king: Glint's Challenge, Thunderheap Keep mission.
- Killing Spree: Dragon's Throat
- Retrieve: Altrumm Ruins
- Protect paths: Amantz Basin
- Survival: Zos Shivros Channel
- Capture and hold: The Aurios Mines, The Shadow Nexus.
- Assassination: Dajkah Inlet
- Solo PacMan (Junundu): Remains of Sahlahja
What's left, then? I can think of many possibilities:
- Find the leader: Waves of monsters appear, and they can only be killed by killing a certain enemy in the party. Once killed that enemy, the rest of the party dies. There will be clues to know which one is the leader (like all monsters taking damage when that one is damage), but it will be completely random and not linked to models or professions. They could be waves of undead in a Krytan island.
- Selective killing: Many enemies, some to be killed, some to not. After killing one or a certain number of 'neutral' foes, you lose. For example, kill White mantle without harming maguuma centaurs. Once in a while a 'neutral' foes may join your side.
- Colloseum: For 12 players. A circle with 12 doors. Every time a monster is killed, another one, stronger than the previous comes to replace it. For example, an old Colloseum the margonites had in the Crystal Desert.
- Siege Fun: First, your party has some seconds to choose the siege weapons you want to set. Once set, you must kill enemies only with siege weaponry.
- Defeat the Hulk: Single powerfull monster with a lof of armor and health and +7 permament health regeneration. The faster it is killed, the higer the score. For example, a super-duped Titan.
- Solo Siege Devourer: This should be for EotN, but would still be great.

The Challenge from killing more and more mobs only goes so far. Eventually you can't get past a stage and you die, so you start over, to get whatever points you get to get whatever item or title you look for. After a while, you get depressed/upset/angry that there is no other content for you to beat.
I Alliance Battle every day. Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose. Sometime I play with masters, sometimes I play with fools. But winning a Zaishen Challenge isn't as satisfying as a win in Random Arena, because given time, you will figure out how to beat the AI.
Bring your A game when you play players, cause sometimes, they bring theirs too. So long as your ego can handle being called a n00b when you lose, it's a challenge and it's fun.

The only way I could see this implemented is if they would disable ALL rewards. Gold, items, even experience, and give no faction whatsoever for it, no title, nothing. Then I would agree.

Gold, drops, and experience would still be around if this got implemented, what your wanting is to redo all current challenge missions AND add some to prophecies, which is far less likely to happen then even re-opening the old arenas.

No, I'm not talking about current missions to be reworked that way. I'm talking about like, the arena that's being suggested where you are just unleashed into an onslaught of monsters.

Then that would be just as unfair to the people who can only the *hoped for* prophecies challenge missions, and could be seen as an imbalanced, if all other challenge missions have rewards, why not the one in prophecies?

Just about all challenge missions in factions can be trapped if done right, and same with Glint's Challenge. Wouldn't say for NF's challenge missions. But my point is, its kinda hard to not make something trapable *lays down trap, pulls, watches enemies walk into traps and die*
